Gender differences in male and female brain

Distinctions in males and females have been the subject of scientific studies for many years. While males are obviously different from females in physical and sexual aspects, the mental differences are still being studied. Employment, education and interest also are given consideration. Mental differences are most evident in mental processing rather than intelligence.

We all know men and women are different, and the battle of the sexes always generates curiosity and speculation. Physical differences between man and women are easy to define and it appears the differences between the sexes are more than what we can see. The University of California-Irvine and Vanderbilt University have conducted studies to reveal some of these differences, which might explain why men and women respond differently in certain circumstances.

The Facts

No study has ever determined if one sex is smarter than the other is. However, male and female brains are different. A study conducted by the University of California-Irvine addressed this issue and found that while there are “no disparities in general intelligence between the sexes,” there are other notable differences in the structures of male and female brains. Vanderbilt University discovered “females have a significant advantage over males on timed tests and tasks, particularly among pre-teens and teens.

Types of Differences

Female brains have larger corpus callosum and a lanterior comissure, according to author and teacher Diane Ackerman. This “may allow for the emotional right side to contribute more intensely to the let side’s conversation, thought, and other doings,” says Ackerman. Ackerman also reports men tend to lose more brain cells in the temporal and frontal lobes as they age, which affects feeling and thinking. Women, however, lose more brain cells in the hippocampus, which affects memory.

Features of Differences

The results of the California-Irvine study demonstrate that these differences mean men have “approximately 6.5 times as much gray matter related to general intelligence as women, and women have nearly 10 times as much white matter related to intelligence as men.” Gray matter is responsible for processing information in the brain and white matter “represents the connections between these processing centers,” according to the study. These differences might explain why men “excel in tasks requiring more local processing like mathematics while women tend to excel at integrating and assimilating information.” Women tend to process more information in their frontal lobes but this activity is dispersed throughout the male brain.

Effects: When speaking of different processing speeds of the brain, the Vanderbilt study maintains that this definition doesn’t “refer to reaction time or the ability to play video games.” Instead, this refers to the “ability to effectively, efficiently and accurately complete work of moderate difficulty.” Interestingly, males and females displayed “similar processing speed in kindergarten and pre-school. Females became much more efficient than males in elementary, middle and high school, according to the study.


While there may be many theories regarding which sex is the smarter of the two, such findings still
